The school music program is the area of the curriculum through which music lessons are made available to students at Yeppoon High. This is delivered by secondary music specialist teachers with units incorporating both practical and theoretical components, the history of music, music analysis and basic composition and harmony studies.
Students may elect classroom music as a subject from Years 9 – 12. It is strongly recommended that Instrumental Music students also select Classroom Music to enhance their theoretical knowledge. The Instrumental Music Curriculum and the Classroom Music Curriculum offer very different aspects in the study of music, but together, complement each other in the development of well rounded musicians who may wish to continue music studies at a Tertiary level.
The aim of the Instrumental Music Program is very clear: "to provide an extra dimension to a school music program." This extra dimension is in the form of group instruction in performance on woodwind, brass, strings or percussion instruments together with the opportunity to develop ensemble performance skills.
The instrumental program is not directed at providing instrumental instruction for individuals. The program is only offered in band and orchestral instruments although there are opportunities for accomplished piano and guitar players to perform with specific ensembles when required.
At Yeppoon High, instruction is offered for the following instruments:
- Brass
- Trumpet; Trombone; Euphonium; French Horn, Tuba
- Percussion
- Tuned (mallets - xylophone; glock; timpani); Untuned (snare drum; bass drum; drum kit)
- Strings
- Violin; Viola; Cello; Double Bass.
- Woodwind
- Flute/Piccolo; Clarinet/Bass Clarinet; Saxophone (Alto/Tenor/Baritone), Oboe, Bassoon.
Specialist instrumental teachers employed by Education Queensland visit Yeppoon High for a designated period of time each week and the allocation of time to Yeppoon High is decided by an Instrumental Music Reference Group. The time allocation to our school is determined by the number of students who regularly attend lessons each week. The minimum number of students in a group should be three with a maximum of ten. An average group would consist of five students.
