NAIDOC Celebrations

4/10/2016
This year’s NAIDOC celebrations at Yeppoon State High were an absolute success.

We had the honour of Wade Mann opening our full school parade with the traditional ‘Welcome to Country’ and our very own Year 12 student Caitlyn Hughes performing the National anthem, along with the Australian classic “My Island Home” by Christine Anu.

Two of our indigenous students were recipients of two very prestigious awards. Shaquia Mackie was the winner of the Naidoc ‘Student of the Year’ award, and Mitchell Johnston was the winner of ‘Trainee of the Year’ award. It was a pleasure to help celebrate these achievements by inviting Elaine Wallace, from Mrael, and Peter Bartlett, from St Brendan’s College, to present these awards.

To end the parade the students had the absolute pleasure to witness the St Brendan’s dancers, the Bunji Boys and Torres Strait Boys; their interaction with the crowd and their proud sense of culture was an amazing experience that touched our hearts and was certainly felt throughout our entire school.
