Code of Behaviour

BEING A SUCCESSFUL STUDENT

Are willing to tackle subject matter in depth and develop a critical attitude to their studies.

Recognise the need for perseverance and good study habits and skills to cope with the increased study and research load.

Are able to balance their social interests with the demands on their time involved in being a full-time student.

If you require help developing your study skills, or your skills as a student in general, you should talk to a teacher you trust of your Year Level Coordinator.

BEHAVIOUR MANAGEMENT

This review, involving students, staff and parents, analysed the policies, or our beliefs about behaviour management, in addition to the procedures, or daily processes and strategies utilised to support these policies/beliefs.

Central to the group’s findings, was the conclusion our behaviour management policy incorporated five key values.

1. Full and active participation

2. Respect

3. Honesty

4. Responsibility

5. Safety

These values are supported by a range of strategies and processes that are articulated in our Procedures Manual, which is freely available from the office.

A proactive, deeply caring, highly professional approach is the goal of our behaviour management policy and procedures. Reaching this goal is made possible through the efforts of our staff who take advantage of regular opportunities to improve their skills in this area.

Additionally, our student support team endeavours to ensure our school is a place where the five key values are central to our daily operations.

The scope and depth of the review conducted in 2002 represents our commitment to behaviour management and the value of a proactive, caring school environment. For more information in any aspect of our behaviour management policy, or the procedures that support it, please contact a member of the administration team.

POLICY FOR A SMOKE FREE SCHOOL

Our Drug Education Policy outlines the procedures that will be put into in instances of student smoking. This policy involves a series of steps that provide students with the opportunities to make healthier choices through exposure to relevant resources, however if the student is involved in repeated smoking incidents, the consequences may involve formal suspension.

This policy will be discussed at length within Care Groups during the course of the year.

SEXUAL HARRASSMENT

It may involve:

• Teasing, name calling or making rude gestures;
• Displaying offensive pictures or graffiti;
• Telling rude jokes or making suggestive comments;
• Staring or ogling;
• Following another person home from school;
• Pestering someone to go out;
• Sending offensive messages (phone, letters, emails, texting);
• Spreading rumours about someone’s sexuality

It can occur:

• Between students;
• Between staff and students (either way);
• Between staff members.

What you can do if you are harassed:

• Tell the person responsible you don’t appreciate it, and that they should stop;
• Talk to your parents/guardians about it
• Talk to a Sexual Harassment Referral Officer (Mr Macdonald, Miss Pozzetti, Mrs Korotkoff, Mrs Morrissey), or see another teacher you feel comfortable talking to; Talk to one of the Deputies or the Principal.

BULLYING

How you can deal with a bully:

Tell them what they are doing is bullying;

Don’t let them involve you in it;

Support other people who might be getting bullied;

Stand up for yourself (tell them to stop, ignore them, say "no", ask someone for help)

Students who bully other students will be dealt with by administration. People who continue to bully others may be asked to show cause why they should remain at Yeppoon High School.

If you find you, or one of your friends are being bullied, ask yourself the following questions:

What is the best way for us to deal with this?

Why might this be happening?

Which teacher or person on staff do I feel comfortable enough to talk to about this?

*Remember:

You need to report what is happening to you. All bullying and harassment will be taken seriously.

UNIFORM EXPECTATIONS

"Schools play an important role in our communities. Student dress codes should promote the good image of the school within the community, and should encourage students to uphold and enhance that image."

Our school supports this statement, and as a group we have agreed we are a uniform school. Our P&C believes our decision to be a uniform school supports this objective (amongst others) as the decision promotes:

A safe environment by enabling ready identification of students and non-students of the school;

An effective teaching and learning environment by eliminating the distraction of competition in dress and fashion at the school;

A supportive environment at the school by fostering a sense of belonging; and

A mutual respect amongst individuals at the school

If students choose not to wear uniform the following process will be followed:

1.

Students not wearing enclosed footwear should be sent to the office immediately to organize appropriate footwear.

2.

Any student out of uniform will present a note to their Care Group Teacher from their caregivers outlining why he/she is not in uniform.

3.

The student’s Care Group Teacher will record officially, and also in the student’s diary.

4.

In the event this occurs twice in a fortnight, the student will be required to meet with a member of Administration to address the issue. Recurrences of this may result in a parent meeting being requested.

Prices of uniforms are now available online from the Uniform Shop.

Department of Education Manual Student Dress Codes: Procedures.

If you chose not to talk to someone about bullying, the school is powerless to help solve the problem.

Everyone has the right to feel safe at Yeppoon High School, and as such bullying will not be tolerated. If you think this is happening to you, talk to a teacher you trust or to someone in administration.

Sexual harassment is any unwelcome sexual attention that is offensice, humiliating or intimidating. This type of behaviour will not be tolerated at Yeppoon High School.

Education Queensland recognises the danger that smoking and passive smoking poses to health, and has declared all government property smoke free. This means that smoking cannot occur on any part of the school grounds, or at any school functions.

In 2002 a review was conduced examining the behaviour management policies and procedures employed at Yeppoon High.
